A SKI HILL WITH HEART

For decades, Sunburst Ski Hill has been a steadfast destination for winter fun. While these seventy-seven acres have changed hands over the years, at its heart of hearts, the ski hill holds true to its origins of being a place for people to make memories.

Winter “Wunder-land”

This is the story of how a farm hill became a winter destination. It begins in 1961, when two families (the Christiansens and the Caseys) bought the land so they would have a place to ski together. They got to work in a jif, clearing the hill for a main run, a 1200-foot T-bar imported from Germany, and a rope tow. They dubbed their new ski hill…Wunderburg.

A decade later, Wunderburg wound up with a group of Milwaukee investors who renamed the hill Sunburst. And with new owners came new stuff: a ticket office, rental building, another rope tow, and a chair lift. In 1984, avid skiers Kim and Jim Engel purchased the ski hill, and for twenty-eight years, they built runs and terrain parks, and established Sunburst as a destination for winter fun.

Sunburst Today

Today, Sunburst is owned by diehard skier Rob Friedl who purchased the ski hill when the Engels retired in 2012. Since becoming the proud owner of the property, Rob has worked tirelessly to maintain, renovate, and expand everyone’s favorite local hill.

Under Rob’s leadership, Sunburst now boasts eleven runs, two terrain parks, and—his claim to fame—the world’s largest tubing hill. Sunburst is the perfect place for skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing. We’re thrilled to offer winter fun for everyone at an affordable price.
